Why I Design Lamps That Feel Like Art
It started with a block of timber and a question I couldn’t ignore:
Why shouldn’t a lamp do more than just light a room? Why shouldn’t it speak something, too?
At Moose Australia, I don’t just design lighting — I create statement pieces that feel like functional sculptures. Each lamp is a one-of-a-kind blend of materials, design, and purpose. For me, it’s about more than brightness. It’s about presence.
The Inspiration: More Than Just Furniture
We’re surrounded by everyday objects — shelves, chairs, light fittings — but so few of them reflect anything personal. I wanted to change that.
To me, a lamp isn’t just an object. It’s a moment of calm. A piece of character. A spark of creativity.
I draw inspiration from nature, movement, and the asymmetry of real life. That’s why many of my lamps feature organic curves, petal-like structures, or raw wood grains that refuse to be tamed.
The Process: Craft Meets Art
Each lamp begins with a solid wood base, often Australian hardwoods like jarrah or marri. I hand-sand, stain, and seal the wood to bring out its natural depth — no two bases are ever alike.
From there, I may:
Add laser-cut acrylic petals in vivid greens or deep ambers
Wrap the piece in natural rope or leather accents
Finish it off with minimalist fittings and soft ambient globes
Every detail is intentional. Every lamp is signed. And no two are ever repeated.
Why It Matters
We spend so much of our time indoors. I believe the objects we surround ourselves with should spark joy, curiosity, and inspiration — not just fill space.
A Moose Australia lamp is designed to:
Stand alone as a sculptural centrepiece
Add warmth and softness to a modern room
Be more than décor — to start conversations
When someone says, “Where did you get that?”
That’s when I know the lamp did its job.
